Nose Piercings

Did you know the nostril piercing is the second most popular type of piercing?  Or that nose piercing jewellery has been worn by Indian women for centuries as an integral part of their wedding jewellery.

The most popular nose piercings are the nostril, septum and bridge.  If you’re looking for something a little more unusual how about a vertical bridge/third eye, nasallang, septril, nasal tip/rhino or Austin bar.  Just to get you started!

Nostril Piercings

Titanium Jewelled Nose StudCan be placed on either side of the nose, or both!  The most natural looking location is in the nostril crease although it’s entirely up to you.

Nose piercing jewellery comes in all shapes and sizes with the most popular being the ‘L’ shaped nose stud.  The jewelled nose stud is available in a myriad of sparkling gem colours with non-jewelled styles including hearts, stars, balls and cones.

Nose bones, bar closure rings, BCR rings and open nose rings are also ideal nostril piercing jewellery.

Some people also like to use a crystal ear stud in their nose.  Just remove the butterfly on the back and bend the post to a 90 degree angle and you’re good to go!

Septum Piercings

The septum is the dividing wall, inside your nose, between your nostrils and is most often pierced in the gap between the cartilage and the end of the nose.

The most popular types of septum piercing jewellery are the circular barbell (CBB), BCR ring and steel bulletLong spikes are also great and come in lengths up to 35mm.

Wearing a septum keeper in your piercing can be useful as you can flip it up inside your nose to hide it should you have the need to.

Steel Bullet Septum KeeperOf course you may also like to go large gauge and stretch your septum piercing.  Steel or UV candy claws, along with circular barbells (CBB) and BCR rings are great for this.

Bridge Piercings

The standard bridge piercing (horizontal position) is placed at the top of the nose in the loose skin between the eyes.

PVD Black Steel Open Nose RingThe usual jewellery to wear in your bridge piercing is the barbell, CBB and BCR.

BioFlex & Bioplast Flexible Body Jewellery

Bioplast Int. Thr. Labret with Square Claw Set GemBioFlex and Bioplast are both inert, bio-compatible plastics and perfect for body piercing jewellery.

They are ideal for initial piercings as they are fully autoclavable, light weight and flexible enough to move with your new piercing, causing less friction.  Some say healing time could be reduced by half!

The chance of any allergic reaction to your BioFlex or Bioplast body jewellery is almost nil as neither contains nickel.  They also conform to the EC Nickel Directive.

Bioplast Cherry Logo Tongue BarBioFlex and Bioplast are also thought to slow down the rate of body jewellery migration compared to a heavier material like steel.

BioFlex and Bioplast can easily be cut to size to give you the very best fit for your body piercing.  They’re great for maternity piercings as they’re flexible and comfortable to wear during your pregnancy and can even be worn during your ultrasound scan.  Just take off the metals balls if you have any.  The added bonus is that you can reduce the length of the belly bar after you’ve had your baby too!

Bioplast Internal Thread Nose Stud 18ct GoldBioFlex & Bioplast are excellent materials for labrets, tongue bars and nose studs as they cause less damage to your piercing and surrounding area than metal body jewellery.

Flexible body jewellery is particularly popular for people who enjoy a physical lifestyle, like sports people, as its supple enough to bend with your body making it very comfortable to wear.

If you’re more of a beach bum BioFlex and Bioplast body Jewellery is ideal as it doesn’t conduct heat like metal jewellery, so you don’t have to worry about it getting hot under the sun!

Ear Piercings

The practice of ear piercing has been around forever, well almost!  The oldest example, to date, was found in the mummified remains of Otzi the Iceman who is believed to be 5300 years old.  He had an ear piercing of 7-11mm, possibly the first stretched ear piercing too!

Through the ages ear piercings have continued to be popular.  Sailors pierced their ears with gold rings in the hope that their earrings would pay for a Christian burial should their bodies be washed ashore.  Even William Shakespeare had an ear piercing!

Ear piercing is still the most popular body piercing today with lobe piercing being the favourite.   Lobe stretching is going large gauge with stretching jewellery available up to 50mm.  If you don’t fancy stretching your lobe piercing you can always fake it with fake plugs and expanders that look like an 8mm piercing!

There are lots of different ways to pierce your ears including scaffold, rim, diath, rook, tragus, anti-tragus, conch, snug and inner pinner for starters!

Once you’ve decided which ear piercing location you fancy, then comes the fun bit, choosing the jewellery to put in it!  If you know what you want, go straight to the ‘Browse by Type’ section to quickly locate what you’re looking for.  If you’re not sure what you fancy, try the ‘Browse by Body Part’ and choose ‘Ear Piercings’ to see the full range of ear piercing jewellery.

The EC Nickel Directive & Body Piercing Jewellery

Steel BCR Ball Closure RingWhy Do We Need The Nickel Directive?

In Europe approximately 10% of women and 1% of men suffer from an allergy to nickel caused by skin absorption of nickel ions, released from nickel containing materials.

The EC Nickel Directive was brought in to combat this by specifying the release rate of nickel in articles which have direct and prolonged contact with the skin.  The Directive covers jewellery along with belt buckles, jeans studs, sunglasses and metal poppers on babies garments etc.

“The Nickel Directive” (European Directive 94/27/EC)
The directive came into effect on the 20th July 2001 and was subsequently amended on the 1st September 2005.

REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII Section 27
Brought into effect on 18 Dec 2006 this directive supersedes & encompasses the EC Nickel Directive as mentioned above.

What Piercing Jewellery Conforms to the Directive?

For Initial Piercings (unhealed): jewellery inserted into the body during the healing period of a piercing must be homogenous (elements evenly spread throughout the metal) and shall not emit nickel at a rate greater than 0.2 microgrammes/cm2/week.

We recommend using titanium body jewellery for initial piercings.

For Healed Piercings: replacement jewellery inserted into the body after the piercing wound has healed must have a nickel release rate lower than than 0.5 microgrammes/cm2/week.

We recommend using titanium, 316L steel, PVD on steel or titanium, Sterling silver, steel-silver, gold plate, acrylic, PTFE, bioplast, silicone, pyrex or organic body jewellery for healed piercings.

TDi – Conforming To The Nickel Directive
Since 1999, TDi bodyjewellery has been working with the Sheffield Assay Office, Analytical Services, testing all jewellery.

TDi operates a ‘due dilligence’ system, as recommended by the Assay Office, to ensure it conforms to the requirements of the ‘Nickel Directive’.

In recognition of this, The Sheffield Assay Office has issued TDi with a ‘Certificate Of Conformity’ click here to view.

TDi Body Jewellery – 14 Years In The Business

Hip, hip, hooray!  It’s our birthday and we’re celebrating 14 years in the business of supplying the very best body piercing jewellery.

With accolades such as…

” You’re so *&**#** awesome!”

“…I’ve worked with you guys for over 10 years and you’ve never let me down”,

… it seems we’re doing something right!

Amazing to think it all started with one rucksack of jewellery and a shed load of determination!  Now we’re wholesaling & retailing worldwide via our website at www.bodyjewellery.co.uk.

We’ve seen many developments in piercing jewellery over the years when steel was pretty much the only choice!    Piercing jewellery is now available in lots of materials including titanium, PVD, acrylic, silicone, bioplast, PTFE (great for pregnancy bars!) & gold plate.

This goes some way to explaining how our product range has grown from 2 sides of a page to over 10,000 pieces!

Also everything is getting bigger!  Barbells used in scaffold piercings are now up to 50mm long and large gauge jewellery for ear piercings go up to a massive 50mm gauge thickness, chunky!

Another change we have welcomed was  the introduction of the EC Nickel Directive in 2001, ensuring high quality materials are used in piercing jewellery to help combat nickel allergies.

Right now the most popular trend is dermal piercing.  It seems like every week we’re adding new dermal anchors, divers & wheels not to mention all their many attachments!  Not surprising really as these wee piercings are so versatile they can be placed almost anywhere and look great to highlight tattoos.

We’ve also embraced social media with our Facebook page featuring the latest jewellery along with the occasional special offer!

As for us, we’re probably fitter and more relaxed than we were 14 years ago, albeit with a few grey hairs!

Gold Plated Body Jewellery

Gold has been used by artisans for thousands of years and is one of the widest used metals today being utilised in applications from electrical, telecoms and IT to aircraft, science and jewellery among others.

Although gold is indestructible, totally recyclable and can be hammered and rolled so finely you can see through it. The gold plating method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal is applied via electroplating which was discovered by Alessandro Volta in 1800.

18 carat gold plated body jewellery is sought after for its shine and colour and is a great alternative to solid gold jewellery which is becoming less affordable with the continued rise in the value of gold.

The Carat (Ct) of gold indicates the percentage of pure gold in the composition.  As pure 24 carat gold is a relatively soft metal it is often combined with other base metals to improve the hardness among other properties.  The percentage of pure gold in the various Carats is approximately 24Ct (100%), 18Ct (75%), 14Ct (58%), 12Ct (50%), 9Ct (41%).

Particularly popular in navel and nipple piercings gold plated body jewellery is also ideal for facial piercings.  Choose from jewelled or plain belly bars, BCR rings, barbells and balls.

Nipple Piercings

Nipple piercings are usually pierced horizontally at the base of the nipple but can just as easily be pierced vertically or any angle in between!  In many people it is also possible to have multiple nipple piercings often crossing each other.

Some of the first male nipple piercings are believed to have been worn by the Karankawa Native Americans.  With female nipple piercing coming to the fore in the 1890’s when Victorian women began to have their nipples pierced with gold rings, some wearing delicate chains or pearls strung in between.

More recently nipple piercing has become popular with celebs like Rihanna, Pink, Christine Aguilera & Nicole Richie sporting nipple jewellery.

If you’re wondering what jewellery to wear in your nipple piercing the most popular choices of nipple jewellery are barbells, BCR rings and circular barbells (CBB)Bar closure rings and coil closure rings are also a good alternative.

Once you’ve decided on the type of jewellery you’re looking for you can select what material you fancy.  Choose from steel, titanium, PVD black & gold or gold plate.  You could also use a flexi shaft barbell that can be cut to size to give you the most comfortable fit.

Nipple surrounds and shields have also become fashionable since ‘Nipplegate’ when Janet Jackson bared her pierced nipple during the Super Bowl.  Choose from designs like angel wings, rose, star, heart and Deputy US Marshall!

If you’re looking for something a little bigger try a large gauge BCR ring available in sizes up to 8.0mm gauge or a snap BCR up to 12.0mm gauge.

Or perhaps you fancy a slave ball BCR ring, or two!

Silicone Body Jewellery

It’s lightweight, it’s soft and it’s super flexible.  Silicone is an ideal material for body piercing jewellery.

Of course silicone has been around for many years and being so versatile it’s used in automotive, electronic, construction and medical applications to name but a few.  Who hasn’t heard of silicone breast implants or seen silicone wristbands to promote awareness of particular causes.

But did you know that silicone is used in some hair products like your shampoo and conditioner to improve shine and in your shaving gel to help it glide?

Silicone is a particularly good material for body jewellery as it is durable, easy to clean and does not contain phthalates.  It also has great thermal stability giving it excellent heat resistance, although I’m not entirely sure how this would be of benefit in your body jewellery!

What I do know is that it’s lightweight which is definitely a bonus for large gauge body jewellery like silicone plugs which come in 10 sizes from 4mm – 20mm.

The flexibility of silicone is also excellent for silicone tunnels, which come in 7 colours and 25 sizes from 4mm to an impressive 50mm!  Another bonus is that you can wear your large gauge silicone ear piercing jewellery comfortably inside your motorcycle crash helmet, safety first!
